CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

A light-touch treatment technique developed by Osteopath John E. Upledger, DO, OMM; works with the body's craniosacral system to support & nourish the central nervous system - improving overall health & well-being.

FAQs

What is craniosacral therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive manual therapy that aims to release restrictions, imbalances & blockages throughout the body systems. By releasing tension patterns within the CranioSacral system, we can expect a better functioning of musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, endocrine, immune, gastrointestinal & reproductive systems.

How does craniosacral therapy work?

CranioSacral therapy involves applying light touch to assess & treat restrictions of the cranium, sacrum and the surrounding membranes including the dura of the brain & the spinal cord. Because these are key components to the central nervous system, the gentle mobilisations in this therapy can elicit a physiological relaxation response. As a result, CST helps to boost general well-being, reduce stress, improve sleep quality, increase energy & enhance the functioning of all the body's organs via the nervous system.

is craniosacral therapy SAFE?

CST has a very low risk of side effects. However, it should not be done in individuals with conditions where a variation and/or slight increase in intracranial pressure would cause instability. This includes: acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage or other preexisting severe bleeding disorders that could be affected by small intracranial pressure changes. It also should not be done in anyone with an epidural leak, recent skull fracture, or acute traumatic brain injury.

Conditions that may be helped with CST

Anxiety & Depression | Stress & Tension-related Disorders | Brainfog | PTSD | Migraines & Headaches | Insomnia | Tinnitus | Digestive disorders | Chronic Neck & Back Pain | Brain & Spinal Cord Injuries | Chronic Fatigue | Fibromyalgia | Vestibular Neuritis | Vertigo

what is the craniosacral system?

The CranioSacral system involves the membranes & fluid that surround the brain & spinal cord, as well as the bones of the face, skull, pelvis & sacrum. These components pulsate in a symmetric, rhythmic motion within our body in accordance to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pumped by the ventricles of the brain. Proper movement of this fluid is essential to our health & well-being as it surrounds our central nervous system via the spine.

What can I expect during a Craniosacral therapy session?

This gentle & profoundly relaxing treatment takes around 40-60 minutes. The client lays fully-clothed on a massage table where only a light touch is used to contact the bones in the cranium (skull), spine and other parts of the body. The treatment DOES NOT involve any manipulation of the joints.

How many sessions will i need?

Because each individual response to CST is unique, the number of sessions needed to resolve any particular condition varies widely. To achieve consistent results, 3-5 sessions in close succession is recommended, although benefits may be felt in the first session alone.

craniosacral therapy is especially helpful for

STRESS

CST promotes a physiological relaxation response in your body by increasing the activity of the parasympathetic ('rest & digest') nervous system. This dampens the chronic 'fight or flight' response your body may be in.

ANXIETY & depression

CST helps ensure the two branches of the vagus nerve - dorsal & ventral - are balanced. These are responsible for regulating social engagement & calming the nervous system down.

SLEEP

CST helps deactivate the Reticular Alarm System (RAM) of the body, which is a complex conniection of nuclei in the brain. It is responsible for regulating the body's sleep-wake transitions.
